What is "The New Normal?"

Since September 11 we have been staring into the face of Death. Now we engage difficulty with a new respect for grief and strife. If we are ever confronted with an overwhelming situation, our personal reactions might surprise us. Can you locate your reactions among the planets and the signs?

Re-define the strengths of each sign, in "The New Normal?" Part II.

Tensions of the Opposites

To be sure, life felt more safe before the calendar spelled, "9-1-1."

Controlling the extremes within ourselves is as much a difficulty as controlling the ones which may come down around our heads from unseen enemies. We're looking for ways to bring meaning to the new experience of chaos and the requirements upon all of us to bring out the Hero Within.

Click on your Zodiacal sign, and if you know your ascendant’s sign, check there also. You may follow the flow of each of your planet's rulers in this way, seeking out the ways in which your responses may be illumined by the symbols.

To each of us goes a criterion of responsibility, dictating our day in moment-by-moment immediacy.

Know Thyself

With Astrology, we may address our individual reactions to outer events even as we develop more ways to fend off the anxieties of the day.

Personal strength and faith are not the same for everyone. Individuals each come to a personal style for developing the Inner Life by understanding in one's own terms what feels authentic, moving and unique. The flavor of these styles are described by the peculiar structure of your astrological chart. By seeking out the tradition of astrology, we benefit by the first premise that our lives are unique. By adding the dimension of the planetary arts we see a transcendant pattern described there: we belong also to the cycles.

Self-knowledge has long been the prize of religious teaching. In a civilization bent on Peace, it is this understanding that creates the greatest tensions in the world, as we have witnessed in the terror of 09/11. Many repeated explanations had to follow the blows to the Islamic communitites of the US. The fundamental elements of any religion have us quantifying ourselves not by what we own, but by who we are. Happiness is not measured by whether we are having a “good hair day.” That sort of superficiality is inappropriate at the moment of a death in the family.

Where is our Inner Hero? Look for "signs" as ordered by the Zodiacal traditions....

In Gemini's mythology of the Twins, ruled by the god of communications, Mercury, we can locate the foot soldier of a new "post-disaster" age: the Post Office Delivery Worker. An image of Gemini, par excellence. Where is the bio-terrorism attacking? The lungs, again ruled by Gemini.

We may "rule" by becoming more like "Gemini," quick thinking, agile of mind, flexible and focussed.

The sign in which you find Mars is how you respond to needs for survival.

ARIES While on errands and living your usual routines, have your survival kit with you: a quantity water, a sharp knife (or pair of scissors), maps of your location, extra batteries for your cellular phone and flashlight, comfortable walking shoes. Being ruled by Mars, you must by nature find greater depth in the perceptions which dictate the difference between the past and present. Learn about the powers of silence which increase your effectiveness. Avoid superficial chit chat and stay focused.

The sign in which you find Venus is how you respond to needs for relief.
TAURUS Learning to let go of personal comfort goes perhaps against your grain, but replace your attachment to things with a new determination to share your resources, if needed. These include the emotional resources to give comfort, and taking the pain of others upon yourself more willingly. Your resourcefulness need not be considered only on a monetary plane. Because you are by nature a “financial planner” you may help those close to you to learn where they have control over their lives through better management of resources. You are ruled by Venus, and wherever she appears in your chart (she varies by sign) goes the hint of where your loving qualities are received and welcomed. Learn about grief, discover what a grieving person most wants to hear about the person or life situation newly departed. Your healing words: I’ll never forget.

GEMINI The communications “expert” of the Zodiac, you are required to stake out all the points of possible break-down of communications, and find new connections in spite of sudden deficiencies. The clever and spontaneous style of Gemini’s wit is best prepared by knowing more about the vulnerabilities of the communications systems on which you and others around you might depend, whether it be a string and tin can, a cellular telephone or a tunnel which joins two sides of a large divide. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, a figure which has the possibility of secrets and invisible presence. Listen, eavesdrop, take note and know with whom you are dealing. Develop a secret code language which communicates more than just the words themselves for the benefit of your immediate support group: family.

CANCER Volunteer some of your time to the development of greater protection for those more vulnerable than yourself. Extend the boundaries of “home” to include community and shelter for the less privileged. The Moon rules Cancer.

The daily qualities of a Lunar type works to maintain fresh supplies, and seeks out alternative sources; takes care to be informed of where to find the things needed if ever confronted with a crisis.

The Sun is the shining ruler of this sign, and signals a brilliance and fortitude which may warm and nourish. Your natural talent for leadership is required in any crisis. Knock on the neighborhood doors if your area is affected by some disaster, and seek out the injured to lead rescue workers where they need to go.

VIRGO Famous for your love of detail, you are the one who notices the small things that later count for big clues. Take account. Wherever the Mercury is located in your chart delineates your style of inquiry. Become curious about paths, trails, walking tours, distances in miles. LIBRA People-pleasing to a fault, your specific role is the arbiter and keeper of the Peace. It may appear as superficial charm but in fact you are capable of a steely resolve to enable the greater numbers to “get out alive,” with your deceivingly cheerful composure. Venus is your ruler, and she is the “Kiss it and make it feel better” goddess who inspires a sweet resolve to be used as a tool for justice. SCORPIO The strong silent one, an unwitting foot soldier of tough resolve, you are a force to be reckoned with. Extremes are your area of expertise, whether by virtue of attitude or profession. You recognize the gritty work of survival and can bite the bullet when the tough stuff comes along. You are motivated and skilled. The sign in which you find Jupiter is how you respond to needs for hope.

SAGITTARIUS Known more for your laughter, you are the one who spots the plug as opposed to the genuine. You are the spirit of the Law, not the technical clause-carrier. How to serve justice may be a personal decision to demonstrate your positive nature, inspiring mirth in the face of difficulty. You are ruled by mighty Jupiter, the big guy. Your focus is on the long-distance carrier and the philosophical underpinning. Making the target, spotting the mark, if you have been disciplined and understand your own nature, provides a successful response to crisis.

The sign in which you find Saturn is how you respond to needs for limitations.

CAPRICORN Survival in the winter of our lives is the concern and keep of this Saturn-ruled sign. Where will the community find water, shelter and be able to maintain their store of goods until Spring returns? That is the particular skill and responsibility of the Capricorn. Known mostly for his favorite (and Nancy Reagan’s) favorite word, “No,” we can count on Capricorn to put his foot down and stop the panic by using his magic statement to sober the hysteria that may surround a crisis. Saturn’s rule over Capricorn gives you a signal for where your instincts lead to greater security. The location of your Saturn and his condition in the chart shows where your instincts are most needed.

AQUARIUS A friend to Mankind, the leader where alternative choices make more sense, a crisis will demand decisions that may be experimental or even rebellious by comparison to the others around you if ever you are caught in a sudden action. Saturn’s rule over this sign also (like Capricorn, only “off-center”) signals where you trust yourself the most and gives you an independence of spirit. Marking off your own territory and staking your personal claim of individuality provides leadership for those more wary and fearful. Your true grit of spirit inspires, and that can be a big help in a hostile encounter.

PISCES The “seeker” can feel what’s in a person’s heart, and empathy can expand in your heart to fully share with others your personal energy or resources. The ability to position yourself in the place of others provides a greater wealth than money ever could when you are in the pinch of some crisis. Jupiter is your ruler, the expansive dealer in “bolts from the blue.” Your presence alone, if you have any self-knowledge, can provide the warmth and pure human love to a perfect stranger in order to enable your survival together. Just take care to know or listen to the hints around your limits too--self-sacrifice does not require you to also become a “statistic.”
